Screen Repair vs. Replacement: Making the Right Choice

Window screens are an integral part of keeping bugs and pests out while also providing fresh air and ventilation to your home. Despite their importance, many homeowners tend to overlook their window screens and doors when completing home maintenance. Not only do old and damaged window screens distract from your home’s curb appeal, but they also lose functionality of what they are supposed to do. Window screens don’t last forever, especially those that are found in your average home improvement store or those that came with your window. When it comes to properly maintaining your window and door screens, you’ll need to be able to decide when it is appropriate to repair or replace screen windows. Here, we’ll review the basics to help you decide which option is right for you.

Considerations for Repair or Replacement

Age

No window or screen will last forever—even the most durable materials will need to be replaced after 8-10 years of use. If your windows are over ten years old, they likely show signs of wear and tear, such as warped frames, damaged screens, and other broken components. At this point, the safe bet is to replace the screen window.

Screen Mesh

If your window screen is fading, discolored, and showing signs of wear and tear, such as rips, holes, and stretched meshing, it is time to rescreen it. If your existing frame is free of damage and still fits in your window, you can safely rescreen it. This is also a great opportunity to upgrade your mesh screen material to a more heavy-duty fabric.

Screenmobile offers multiple options for screen material replacement depending on your needs:

  • Fiberglass Screens
  • Coated Polyester Screens
  • Pet Resistant Screens
  • Solar Screens
  • No-see-um Screens

Frame Integrity

When your window frame is bent or warped, no longer fits in the window, or is rusted, rotting, or deteriorating, it is time for replacement. The strength of your window screen frame will depend on the material it is made of, whether it is wood, vinyl, aluminum, or fiberglass. When choosing to have your window screen frame professionally installed, Screenmobile will replace it with a heavy-duty, durable frame in the color of your choice.

Functionality

In inspecting your windows, if you notice any of the following issues, it is likely time for replacement:

  • Difficulty opening and closing windows
  • Window screen frames are stuck
  • Poor ventilation when windows are open

When to Repair

For minor damage, material upgrades, and aesthetic changes, window screen repair is an affordable option. If your window screen has small holes or tears, you can temporarily patch these up with screen patches or glue. For more extensive screen damage, such as large holes or stretched meshing, it is recommended to rescreen your window.

Other components of your window, including tension springs and lift tabs, may be replaced without having to completely replace screen windows. Screenmobile repair services can include replacement wheels, reinforced corners, and other specialty parts to help maintain your existing window or door screens.

Porches and Patios

Now that you have a better idea of when to repair or replace screen windows, the same rules apply to your screened porch or patio. Depending on the condition of your screens, you may only require a panel or two to be repaired or rescreened.

If you want a full upgrade with more durable materials, it is recommended that you convert your existing porch enclosure to an aluminum frame. Typical wood-framed staple screens are more affordable but will likely require more maintenance through the years. Wood frames are more affected by outdoor elements and are prone to rotting, corroding, peeling, and damage from pests, including termites. Aluminum frames have a higher upfront cost but are virtually weather, moisture, and pet-resistant. An added benefit to aluminum framing is that you can re-screen your space without having to deconstruct your room.

If you’re ready to revitalize your outdoor space but aren’t sure where to begin, Screenmobile offers comprehensive porch, patio, and enclosure repair services.

Sliding Screen Doors

When deciding whether to repair or replace your sliding screen door, you’ll want to inspect the condition of each of the main components. You’ll also want to consider whether you require an upgrade to more durable materials if the door is in a high-traffic area or if you have large pets. First, inspect the mesh—if there are holes and tears or spots of grey, you may need a rescreening. If the mesh is fine, move on to the frame. Here, you’ll want to make sure the frame is not bent—if it is, you’re in need of replacement. Lastly, check the latch and wheels. If you have already noted mesh and frame issues and the function of your latch and wheels is diminished, you need a replacement. If there are no other issues, you’re a good candidate for repair.

Spring Allergies? How Pollen-Resistant Screens Can Help

Spring Allergies? How Pollen-Resistant Screens Can Help

As the temperatures begin to rise, the days become sunnier, and plants and flowers start to bloom, there’s nothing better than opening your windows or screen doors to let some fresh air into your home. Without a window screen pollen filter, air may not be the only thing you’re letting in when you open your windows. Spring is the season when you’re most likely to see and feel the effects of pollen—the almost microscopic particles of yellow dust that collect on your car, outdoor furniture, and window and porch screens. Pollen is not only annoying to clean up, but it can also wreak havoc on your sinuses if you’re allergic to it. Roughly 81 million people in the United States suffer from seasonal allergies, and pollen is the leading cause. Pollen in the air can cause sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and watery eyes. If you have asthma, pollen may even be a trigger for an asthma attack. If you tend to suffer from these allergy symptoms each spring, continue reading to learn about a window screen pollen filter and other spring allergy solutions for your home.

What is Pollen?

Pollen is a powdery yellow material produced by most plants (flowers, trees, grass) to help fertilize other plants of similar species. These tiny grains are small enough to be picked up by the wind and carried through the air. When pollen counts are high, those with seasonal allergies are likely to suffer, even when they are indoors.

Understanding Pollen Particle Size

Pollen is usually measured in microns—a unit which measures the diameter of a spherical object and, like the word microscopic suggests, is exceptionally small. Pollen can vary in size from 10 to 1000 microns. To put this in perspective, a single human hair is roughly 100 microns wide. This means that your average window and porch screens may not be protected against pollen floating in the breeze if they are not made of the right materials. Most window screens are made to prevent insects and other intruders from entering your home, but they may not be suitable for keeping particles as small as pollen out.

Can Insect Screens Prevent Pollen from Getting Indoors?

There are a variety of screen fabric/ mesh densities on the market, each offering a varying layer of protection from insects or other pesky nuisances. The mesh density is measured by individual strands per square inch. For example, a standard insect screen is woven with 18 vertical and 14 or 16 horizontal strands per square inch, commonly referred to as 18×14 or 18×16. In areas that are affected by no-see-ums, a more tightly woven 20×20 screen mesh is used. However, blocking pollen particles requires a tightly woven filtration screen mesh, known as an allergy screen.

If you need clarification on which screen is going to work best or need a pro to help install your allergy guard, Screenmobile can help

Allergy Screens

One temporary solution for keeping pollen out is to install a window screen pollen filter. These allergy-reducing screens can be fitted to your existing window screens and will prevent smaller pollen particles from entering. Allergy screens are cut to size, fitted to your window, secured with window caulking or tape, and can be removed once allergy season is over. Studies suggest that pollen screens can effectively reduce the amount of pollen entering through windows by 80-100%, depending on the type and size of pollen particles.

Pro’s + Con’s of Allergy Screens

Cons:

  • More maintenance. Since allergy screens are effective at blocking pollen, they are also incredibly effective at blocking/ collecting dust. Customers will need to wash their screens more often to keep them working properly.
  • Potentially reduced airflow: as the pollen screen collects particles, it will start to clog up the screen, potentially reducing airflow. This is easily solved by cleaning the screen to remove those built-up pollen and dust particles.

Pros:

  • Studies have shown allergy screens to be effective at reducing allergens entering the home.
  • Allergy screens also act as an insect barrier, so you can prevent both the bugs and the dust from making their way indoors.

Other Tips for Mitigating Seasonal Allergies

  • Check pollen counts for your area. When pollen counts are high, consider closing your windows and reducing outdoor activity.
  • Use central AC and air purifiers that can filter out allergen particles.
  • Clean pollen off your window and porch screens frequently throughout the spring season.
  • Ensure your screens are free of rips or tears and that there are no gaps between them and the frames.
  • Eliminate dust from surfaces around your home. (If you struggle with dust we highly recommend The Cleaning Authority)

Patio Screens: Create a Relaxing Outdoor Retreat

A well-designed screened-in patio can elevate an experience as simple as your morning cup of coffee or your evening glass of wine. Where else can you enjoy the sound of birds chirping, feel the breeze of a warmer summer night, or watch a beautiful sunset without being bothered by pesky mosquitos or having to change out of your pajamas? Screened-in patio designs can serve many purposes for a homeowner and can provide endless benefits, but before setting out to design your perfect outdoor retreat, there are a few logistics to work out. To create your ideal screened patio, consider the climate where you live, the location and function of your patio, building materials, and design and décor preferences. Follow this screened-in patio designs guide to create a serene and relaxing outdoor retreat that you can enjoy for years to come.

The Function of the Space

What will be the chief function of your patio? Is your porch a place to relax and enjoy the view? Think about the end goal of your space– are you trying to block some of the sun for a warm summer nap, prevent bugs from ruining your dinner party, or add privacy to your outdoor living space? The function of your outdoor retreat can help you determine what screen materials to use as well as the style of décor and type of furniture.

How Often and When You Will Use It

Another consideration is how often and when you will use your patio. If you plan on using your patio year-round, you may want to consider a convertible three-season room to easily accommodate the current climate. You can also add ceiling fans or split units, which can cool and heat the space all year. Another option is adding a fireplace or wood-burning stove to keep your space comfortable all season long.. There are also different screen options to choose from to help circulate air, provide shade in the warmer months and insulate the space in the cooler months.

Location

Choosing the right location for your outdoor living space can depend on a few factors, including function of the space, the climate, and privacy and view from the street or neighbors’ homes.

You’ll get more usage out of your patio If you place it near other rooms you frequently use, such as your kitchen and living rooms. In this way, you extend your living space and add to the functionality of your patio.

If you live in a place with a cooler climate, you may want your patio in a place that receives the most sun exposure, but the reverse will be true if you live in a place with a warmer climate.

Finally, consider the view from your patio and choose a location that will still provide privacy and seclusion.

Design and Décor

To create a stylish outdoor living space, you’ll want to add design elements that are not only functional but also match the style of your interiors to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor. The below screened-in patio design style tips can help you transform your outdoor space into a relaxing outdoor retreat.

Hanging Décor

Hang lights, family photos, and artwork on porch walls. Add ceiling fans, lantern lamps, market lights, and chandeliers to the ceiling.

Pick a Theme

Match the theme of your interiors or create a coastal, bohemian, or farmhouse-style outdoor oasis. Pick a color scheme to match your theme and style.

Install Sunshades

Block out the sun in style by installing solar shades or use stylish curtains.

Add Comfortable Seating

Add a seating area with comfortable outdoor furniture made of woven and wicker weather-proof material. Place your furniture on an outdoor rug made of jute to tie the space together.

Create Screen Porch Zones

Divide your outdoor space into zones to entertain, eat, and relax. Consider hanging a TV, installing a fireplace, wood-burning stove or even an outdoor kitchen.

Greenery and Florals

Mix it up with potted and hanging plants and flower vases.

How to Stop Pets from Running Through Your Screen Door

Imagine you’ve just picked up your new furry member of the family and brought them home. You feel prepared after purchasing the food and water bowls, treats, pet beds, collar and leash set, and all the other fun supplies your pet needs. You’re ready to go on your first walk together, but as you go to open your front door, your dog sees a squirrel through the screen. Before you know it, your cherished pet is halfway across the yard, and your screen door has a Husky-sized hole in it. This scenario is a pet owner’s nightmare but can be avoided with proper planning.

Dogs are not the only pet perpetrators of screen damage, either. Cats are infamous for climbing screen doors and will scratch right through a flimsy screen to chase a bird or another cat. Protecting your screen doors from pets may not be your first thought when embarking on the pet-ownership path, but it should be on the list. Repairing and replacing your screen doors aren’t the most fun way to spend a weekend, and no pet owner wants to put up lost pet posters around the neighborhood because you want to enjoy some fresh air.

Pet-Friendly Screen Solutions

Whether you’re looking to update your existing screen door or replace it with something more pet-friendly, there are easy and affordable solutions to protect screen doors from pets. From pet-proofing your window and door screens with pet-resistant screens to metal pet guards and customized pet doors, there are many ways to protect your screen door from pets. To help you decide which solution is best for your needs, here is a comprehensive review of the different pet screen solutions.

Pet Resistant Screens

Pet-resistant screens are the best solution for smaller pets that can paw or scratch at and climb your screen door. Pet-resistant screens are made of heavy-duty vinyl-coated polyester and are more durable than aluminum or fiberglass screens. Though these screens are made with thicker material, they function as standard screens without sacrificing natural light, airflow, and visibility. Consider installing pet-resistant screens in high-traffic areas such as front doors and patio screen doors. Your pet will still be able to enjoy looking outside through the screen but will have a more challenging time damaging it.

Pet Guards

Some dogs need a clear boundary to help prevent them from bounding through a door to get outside. Regular screen doors can be so “see-through” that to an eager dog, they might look like an open door to freedom. Pet guards are an extra shield between your pet and your screen door. Pet guards are made with woven metal and are suitable for larger pets that have the strength to charge through a screen door. You won’t need to update your existing screen to a pet-resistant screen if you install a pet door guard since your pet won’t have access to the screen itself. Pet guards come in varying designs and colors to complement the design of your home. Whether you have a sliding or swinging screen door, pet guards can protect your screen from pets and other forces that may cause damage.

Pet Doors

Doggie doors, or pet screen doors, are great for pet owners with enclosed yards or patios. Pets can easily come and go as they please, and pet owners don’t have to worry about pets scratching at the door to let them know they want to go outside. If you have a pet that you let in and out all the time, you may benefit from installing a doggie door. Screenmobile offers screen doors with pet doors already installed, or you can have a doggie door added to your existing screen door.

Things to Consider About Pet Doors

If you’re thinking about installing a pet door, be sure to consider the following:

  • Pet doors may not be suitable for households with small children as they may be able to crawl out of the pet door.
  • Ensure your pet door leads to an enclosed space free of poisonous plants or other things that could harm your pet.
  • Be aware of other predators in your area, such as coyotes or large birds that might endanger your pet.
  • Be mindful of your pets hunting habits, and don’t be surprised if they bring you a well-meaning gift of a dead animal!

Extra Tips to  Stop Pets from Running Through Your Screens

Maybe you have a party later in the day and can’t get Screenmobile’s speedy service in time, or you just want to further pet-proof your screens; beyond choosing durable materials and guards, try these simple strategies:

  • Visual Cues: Add stickers or post-it notes at pet eye level on screen doors as a reminder of the barrier.
  • Training: Use positive reinforcement to teach pets to respect screen boundaries and wait for commands before exiting.
  • Regular Inspections: Check screens regularly for wear or damage for timely repairs.
  • Furniture Placement: Keep furniture away from screens to prevent pets from using it to jump or climb on screens.
  • Scent Deterrents: Use non-toxic scents, like a mild vinegar solution, around screens to discourage pets from approaching.

These additional actions, combined with pet-resistant screens, guards, and doors, help ensure pet safety and help avoid more mishaps.

Patio Screen Door Removal: Step by Step

Step One: Gather Materials

Before you begin your DIY screen door removal project, you’ll want to gather the tools required to complete the job. Luckily, you only need a few: a screwdriver and a putty knife. If you don’t have a putty knife, a butter knife, a flat screwdriver or even a metal ruler will suffice. If the screws in your patio door are tightly fixed, you may need a power drill as well.

Step Two: Clear the Area

To avoid any damage to your home décor, remove any items you have located near the screen door, such as curtains, outdoor plants, patio furniture, etc.

Step Three: Locate the Roller Wheels and Screws

Sliding patio screen doors slide on their tracks via two wheels at the top and bottom of the door frame. These wheels are held in place by two screws which can be found either directly above the wheels or on the corners of the door frame.

Step Four: Loosen the Screws

Using a Phillips screwdriver, turn the screw counterclockwise to raise the wheels up. Continue turning until you can see the head of the screw sticking out of the socket. Repeat this step on both sides of the screen door. Once the screws are loosened, you should be able to lift the screen door leaving a space between the bottom of the door and the track, revealing the two roller wheels. If the door does not easily raise from the track, you may need to remove the screws altogether.

Step Five: Lift the Screen Door from the Bottom Track

Starting at one corner, lift the screen door, slide your putty knife or other flat tool underneath the roller wheel, and gently press upward to compress the springs. Be careful not to press too hard, as this can dent or bend the frame. Once the wheel is recessed into the door frame, with the putty knife still in place, carefully pull the door towards you and over the lip of the bottom track. Be sure not to pull the door more than an inch, or you’ll risk bending the frame. Repeat this step on both sides of the screen door.

Pro Tip: To avoid warping the door frame, have another person assist in removing the screen door from the track. Using two flat tools, raise the roller wheels simultaneously and gently pull the door off the track.

Step Six: Lower the Screen Door from the Top Track

Once the bottom of the door is free from the track, you should be able to easily lower the screen door from the top track. Be sure to place your successfully removed screen door in a safe place to avoid damage, such as leaning up against a wall or laid out on a flat surface.

Reinstalling Your Screen Door

To reinstall your original or replacement screen door, start by aligning the top wheels onto the top track. Then, gently lift the door to compress the top springs and align the bottom wheels with the bottom track. If you have trouble re-aligning the bottom wheels, use your putty knife to gently compress the bottom wheel springs and move the wheel into place over the bottom track. Be sure to test that your door slides smoothly in the track and adjust the fit accordingly.

Smart Home Screens: Home Automation Hacks

“Smart” home technology was once to be the product of science fiction. As technology advances, things like Roombas, smart fridges, and the ability to control everything in your house right from your phone are making this convenient automation science fact.

While you’re on your way to automating your home, don’t let your windows fall to the wayside. Smart home devices have a ton of customization options, with some solutions that most might not even think of when they’re setting up their systems through products like Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa. Tech-savvy window and patio screens can drastically improve your space, make your life easier, and even save you a little money, too.

Smart Shades 101

Simply put, smart shades are window shades controlled via a remote device, either a bespoke remote or through automation with Google Home or other automation apps and devices. When smartphones first began to make waves in 2007, tech giants started to try to find ways to let them help us with everything.

When it comes to tech for your windows or outdoor spaces, there are plenty of reasons to love motorized shades. Smart shades and motorized window screens integrate seamlessly into a smart home setup.

How Do Smart Shades Work?

When setting up smart shades, Google Home or other smart home automation systems seek out and connect to the motorized shade’s internal signal. An internal power supply fuels motorized screens, be it a solar panel, battery pack, or electrical socket. A command sent from your Google Home or smartphone sets the quiet motor to work opening, closing, or changing the angle of smart shades and awnings.

Timers

If you know exactly when the sun’s at just the right angle to light up your living room, keep your plants happy, or wake you up in the morning, you can also let your smart shade and Google Home system know. Through home automation, your motorized shades can rise and lower at certain times throughout the day without any additional work from you.

Wind and Sun Sensors

When connected to smart shades, Google Home, and other smart home automation systems, wind sensors can take even more of the guesswork out of lowering and raising your shades. These sensors react to elements such as temperature and wind speed to adjust your motorized shades automatically as needed.

Why does this matter? When winds are high, When winds are high, the lowered screen can act like a giant sail. These specialized wind sensors detect when your screen may be at risk of wind damage and will raise it preventatively.

As for sun sensors, detecting when the sunlight and heat are at their peak throughout the day can help boost the energy efficiency of your window screens. Heat gain will be dramatically reduced, keeping the home cool and preventing you from needing to crank up the air conditioner.

Obstacle detection sensor

Obstacle detection sensors in motorized screens prevent damage by halting or retracting the screen if they detect objects like furniture or pets in its path. This feature protects both your belongings and the screen itself, ensuring its longevity and smooth operation, thereby saving on potential repair costs.

A remote control for motorized window shades is lying on a carpeted floor, indicating a modern home automation setup.

Benefits of Smart Shades and Automation

Convenience

There is no need to interrupt your film just to lower the shades and set the mood. Simply use your phone or Google Home to command your smart shades from the comfort of your couch. Wind and sun sensors, when paired with timers, wind and sun sensors mean you’ll always have your motorized shades and awnings working at their best, when needed the most, without any additional input from you.

Energy conservation

Window screens, especially motorized and retractable solar screens, can be ideal in the fight for energy efficiency. Poorly insulated glass windows can let in enormous amounts of heat and let valuable warmth escape in the winter. By incorporating motorized sun shades into your home automation system, you can freely adjust your sun protection based on the weather, saving energy, time, and money.

Additionally, the sun’s harsh UV rays can, over time, damage your furniture, flooring, and artwork or photographs that are in the way of its view. Solar screens can effectively block out UV rays without restricting your airflow. Solar screens will decrease the light in a space.

Sun sensors also mean you can set your window coverings to close as it gets darker, right around the time your interior lights click on with the help of smart bulbs. This means you’ll save electricity by making the most of the day’s sunlight until you absolutely need to flip the switch and turn up the lights.

Privacy Enhancement

Automated smart shades add privacy to your house. Control your shades with a smartphone or voice command to quickly change your home’s visibility—A must for maintaining privacy during important moments or when living in densely populated areas. Automated settings can lower shades at sunset or other times to keep your private life private. With smart shades, you gain control over how much of your interior is visible from the outside, effortlessly maintaining your privacy without sacrificing convenience or style.

Safety

Kids and pets are prone to accidents, and making your home child-friendly gets one step easier through home automation with smart shades. Since they’re remotely operated, pulleys and cords that can pose choking hazards are taken out of the equation, and all of the mechanisms that lift and lower the shades are at the top of the shade, keeping them out of reach.

Security

While they can’t keep someone from breaking in, smart home automation can still play a part in your security systems. While you’re away, smart shades can help give the appearance of your home being occupied as they rise and lower during the day. Closing them during the day can also keep prying eyes away, even when you’re home, allowing for privacy and peace of mind.

Waking Up Relaxed

Sunlight can be an excellent way to wake up naturally – it can kickstart your body’s natural circadian rhythm, improving your sleep health. Replace your alarm clock with the most natural wake-up device around: a natural sunrise. Have your screens set up to react to a sun sensor or arranged on a timer so that they rise right when the sun is coming up. You’ll be gently awoken in a non-jarring way, allowing you to start your day on the right foot.

Expanding Your Smart Home Setup

If you’re looking for the latest ways to expand your smart home network, don’t miss out on the advantages of smart shades. They’re often overlooked, but smart shades are surprisingly easy to integrate into your Google Home or Amazon Alexa smart home dynamic.

Increased Home Value

In today’s complicated housing market, gaining a competitive edge is crucial. Buyers want to get the most bang for their buck, and having smart home technology baked right in is always a strong plus. Prospective home buyers might be swayed to make a choice about their next home if they know that yours comes with smart, motorized shades ready to connect. Plus, it’s amazing for curb appeal.

Managing Smart Shades with Google Home

If you’re worried about integrating your smart shades into your existing smart home system, then fret no more: once your motorized shades are installed, they’re easy to set up.

Your smart hub can easily connect with motorized shades that are compatible with Google Home. Once you’ve had your motorized window shades professionally installed, open your Google Home app. Select ‘add’ and connect your Screenmobile shades by searching for them within the hub.

From there, use Google Assistant to open and close the name of your motorized shades. You can say, “Hey Google, open the left retractable window shade.” or “Hey Google, close the right living room window shade by 50%.”

You can also assign your smart shades to ‘scenes’ that suit certain moods, especially when combining them with lighting and temperature automation.

Professional Installation Makes A Difference

While you automate your home with smart technology, you’ll need easy-to-operate motorized shades, ones with quiet motors, and, importantly, expert setup.

While there are ways to DIY your smart shades, there’s a considerable margin of error. Choose your favorite shades and have them installed by the professionals at Screenmobile. When you know your smart shades were installed with care, you’ll reduce your chance of mechanical mishaps or connection misfires.

Contact Screenmobile to find the motorized shade option that best suits your lifestyle and add smart shades to your automation setup today.

The Benefits of Having Window Screens Installed in Your Home

Many of us don’t think too hard about our window screens and their purpose; for most homes, they’re built right into the existing frames, and we tend not to notice them until something rips or breaks. If you live in a home without them already built-in, you might wonder why you should have window screens in the first place – do they really make a difference?

In fact, the benefits of window screens can impact your overall quality of life, from improving your health to keeping your energy bills low. Here, we’ll dissect some of these advantages and help you learn why investing in quality window screens is entirely worth it.

Air Circulation

Opening the windows is a perfect way to let light shine in and welcome a pleasant breeze. That fresh air does so much more than just cooling your house down and lowering your energy bills. One of the benefits of window screens is a drastic improvement in clean air circulation within the home.

Circulation and air quality are crucial to your comfort and health alike. While it’s helpful in making the room feel more pleasant by keeping things from getting stale and stuffy, there’s actually even more good work being done when fresh air is allowed to flow freely. It tempers the buildup of mold particles by preventing moisture from lingering, keeps odors and fumes from lingering, and can even keep you healthy by reducing airborne viral concentrations.

A well-constructed screen allows homeowners to open their windows without fear, fostering healthy airflow and ventilation while letting in the breeze and keeping out dust, pollen, and bugs.

Energy Efficiency

Across the board, everyone loves to save a little bit of money where they can. Utility bills are an unavoidable part of life, but there are a few things you can do to keep them manageable. Anyone living in a warmer part of the country knows that running the air conditioner will surely make the power bill rise when summer hits. One of the many benefits of window screens is their energy efficiency.

Window screens, especially solar screens, reduce solar heat gain, meaning your house stays cooler. When your home isn’t as swelteringly hot, you’ll be more likely to keep the HVAC system turned off.  Not only is that better for the environment, but it’s also better for your wallet. Solar screens can even reduce your exposure to harmful UV rays.

Want an extra layer of sun protection? A retractable awning can also keep the heat from pouring in.

Protection from the Elements

Year-round, window screens effectively filter against water, allergens, and other debris – it can even keep bugs at bay. Here are just a few of the ways window screens can keep the outdoors from coming in.

Allergens

While there are tons of reasons to leave your windows open, as discussed above, some may feel these will be totally negated when sniffling, sneezing, and itchy-eyed allergy season rolls around. That’s where one of the benefits of window screens comes in: window screens can act as an effective barrier against some common allergens.

Pollen is one of the most significant sources of seasonal allergic reactions. Most outdoor plants produce it, and you can always expect that at any time of year, there is pollen afoot in the air. The peak seasons are spring and fall. Fine-meshed window screens have holes too tiny for pollen to creep through.

Dust behaves similarly, acting as another extremely common but avoidable irritant. When the wind kicks up dust and dirt, one of the advantages of window screens is their ability to keep it, and the dust mites that can come with it, at bay.

Water

During seasons of heavier rainfall, window screens are a preventative measure that helps deflect water damage, mildew, and mold. Mold and mildew are unsightly at best and damaging to your health and home at worst. Water protection will not only aid in the lifespan of your windows but also keep them easier to clean.

Animal and Bug Protection

Opening your windows to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature should not involve inviting nature itself into your living room. Anything from a housefly to a bird could easily swoop in through an open window. A window screen creates a bug-and-bird-proof barrier, while still enabling you to enjoy the sights and sounds of the outside world.

While enjoying the fresh air from an open window, you should also remember the safety of your household pets. Curious cats and playful dogs frequently find windows to provide an exciting viewpoint to the outside world. This can be an enjoyable and enriching experience for them. However, typical window screens are not intended to keep pets indoors or prevent them from escaping. Pet owners should supervise their pets near open windows or take further precautions. Pet-resistant screens, which are meant to be more durable, can withstand damage from claws and teeth, but they should not be relied completely on to keep pets in.

Curb Appeal

The curb appeal of window screens is undeniable. Clean, well-maintained window screens make an excellent first impression when showing, selling, or even just driving past a home. They protect windows from debris or even a stray golf ball and can create a uniform look throughout the home’s exterior.

Quality Window Screens Matter

We’ve covered most of the benefits of window screens, but one thing can make or break the impact of these advantages: quality.

Lower-quality window screens may have a less costly upfront expense, but they’ll quickly deteriorate. The benefits of installing window screens in your home will be rapidly negated when a cheap one breaks, bends, tears, or simply doesn’t do its job to the standards it could.

When it comes to screening windows, quality counts. Screenmobile offers a wide variety of high-performance, well-made window screens that are installed by experienced hands and measured on-site to fit your windows exactly.

Mobile Home Screens: An Easy Upgrade

Mobile Home Easy Upgrades: Screens

Mobile homes have become increasingly popular in recent years, offering an affordable and flexible housing option. However, ensuring proper airflow and pest control can be a challenge for many mobile homeowners.

Screens play a crucial role in addressing these issues, allowing fresh air to circulate while keeping insects and other pests out. Without screens, mobile homes can become stuffy and uncomfortable, leading to health problems and decreased quality of life. Additionally, pests such as mosquitoes, flies, and rodents can carry diseases and cause damage to the home. Installing new or updating old window screens is one of the easiest mobile home upgrades that can do so much for your home.

The Appeal of Mobile and Manufactured Homes – Why Screens Matter

Choosing a mobile or manufactured home can provide a comfortable, cost-effective, and community-oriented living experience. These homes offer the benefit of efficient space utilization, ensuring a cozy environment that meets the needs of its residents. A key aspect of maintaining the comfort and healthiness of this living space is ensuring proper ventilation and fresh air circulation. This is where the value of having the right screens on windows and doors becomes evident.

Proper screens play a crucial role in enhancing the living experience in mobile homes. They allow for the enjoyment of fresh air without the inconvenience of unwanted bugs, contribute to regulating the indoor temperature, and help manage energy costs more effectively. Ensuring good ventilation with the help of screens is vital for a pleasant and comfortable mobile home living experience.

Screenmobile has screens for any type of door.

The Essential Role of Screens in Mobile Homes

Installing window screens in a mobile home can be a simple and affordable upgrade that can improve your quality of life in several ways. Firstly, window screens can help to keep insects and other pests out of your home, allowing you to enjoy fresh air without worrying about unwanted visitors. Additionally, they can help to reduce the amount of sunlight and heat that enters your home, providing a more comfortable living environment and potentially lowering your energy bills. Finally, window screens can also provide an additional layer of security, helping to keep your home safe and secure from potential intruders. Let’s break down the benefits of window screens.

Insect Protection

There’s a reason window screens were chosen by the Global Health Now project as one of the top 100 objects that shaped public health. Screens can help protect you from mosquito and insect-borne viruses. West Nile, Dengue, Yellow Fever, and Zika diseases are all transmitted by mosquitos. By simply using a screen, you can significantly reduce your risk of exposure to these harmful diseases.

Ventilation

Window screens can also help improve airflow and ventilation in your home or workspace. This is especially important during the hot summer months when proper ventilation is essential for your comfort and well-being. They enable you to keep your windows open and let the fresh air circulate throughout your home without any concern of insects. This is also great for your pets, who need fresh air just as much as you do. Giving your furry friends the chance to have access to the smells and sights of the outdoors can give them plenty of fun. Window screens made from pet-resistant materials can ensure that your screens always look great.

Better Privacy

Some window screen materials also provide privacy during the day. This can be especially helpful for those living in mobile home parks where windows frequently face other homes or common areas for foot travel. The great benefit of these privacy screens is that they enable homeowners to keep their privacy without having to sacrifice natural light.

Temperature Control

Because mobile houses have smaller walls and less effective insulation than stick-built homes, temperature regulation presents particular issues. Screens aid in natural ventilation and energy efficiency by allowing cool breezes in while keeping direct sunshine out. Furthermore, boosting insulation in mobile homes is critical for improving temperature control. This can lessen reliance on air conditioning and heating, resulting in lower energy expenditures. Implementing these measures not only enhances interior comfort but also provides cost-effective indoor climate maintenance in mobile homes.

Dust and Debris

Depending on where you live in the nation, your area may be prone to dust or pollen based on the season. Screens can help filter out dust and debris from entering the home.

UV Protection

While UV rays from the sun are not immediately dangerous to health indoors, they can cause damage to the interiors of your home. Long-term exposure to these rays can cause the colors of wall decor, paint, and fabrics to fade, giving them a bleached and worn-out appearance. Window screens provide an efficient answer to this issue. Screens protect your interior furnishings and decor from sun damage by blocking out dangerous UV rays. This not only preserves the appearance and durability of your home’s interiors, but it also allows you to enjoy natural light without the risk of UV fading and damage.

How To Install Window Screens

Installing new window screens is an essential step in protecting your home from UV rays, insects, and maintaining privacy. The installation process varies based on the type of screen and window you have. Here are common methods:

  • Lift Clips: These are small tabs at the bottom of the screen. To install, lift the screen into the track, compress the springs, and then slide the bottom out to secure it in place.
  • Casement Clips: These small clips are screwed into the frame. Once in place, they swivel to hold the screen firmly.
  • Plunger Latches/Slide Latches: These are common in many screen types. Typically, they involve pushing a plunger or sliding a latch to secure the screen in its track. For detailed instructions, you might want to consult the professionals at Screenmobile.
  • Bail Latch: This is a small clip or hook that loops over a screw to hold the screen in position. It’s simple and effective for quick installations.

While these methods can be DIY-friendly, getting a professional finish necessitates accuracy and knowledge. If you’re concerned about the process or simply prefer a flawless installation, there’s a better way.

Winterizing Your Screens: Protecting Against the Cold

As winter approaches, the need to keep your home warm and comfortable becomes more evident.. Let’s explore how you can effectively winterize your screens and create a cozy indoor atmosphere.

How to Winterize Screens

Clean First

Before winter sets in, ensure your screens are free from dirt and debris. A clean screen looks better and functions more efficiently,

Check for Damage

Regular screen maintenance involves inspecting them for any damage. Tears, holes, or worn-out mesh can compromise the screen’s function. If any issues arise, it might be time for a repair or even an upgrade.

Weatherstripping and Caulking

Enhance your home’s insulation by applying weatherstripping around window screens to reduce drafts. This involves using materials like foam or rubber to create a seal between the screen and window frames, preventing cold air ingress and warm air escape. Additionally, seal any gaps around the window or door frames with appropriate caulk to further prevent drafts. This dual approach of weatherstripping and caulking not only ensures a warmer home during colder months but also contributes to energy efficiency and reduced heating costs.

Remove Window Screens in Harsh Weather Conditions

During the colder months, it is best to remove window screens in areas that have heavy snowfall or ice conditions. Snow and ice can gather on screens, causing stretching or damage as a result of the ice’s weight and expansion. Removing the screens prior to the commencement of severe weather can help to prevent this damage and increase the life of your screens. Furthermore, this process facilitates snow removal from windows and may result in improved insulation, since some window types are more efficient without screens in place throughout the winter. This preventative technique is a simple yet effective way to safeguard your home’s components and improve weather resistance.

Think About Thermal Curtains

Consider installing thermal curtains or drapes to further insulate your windows and doors. They provide an added layer of protection against winter’s chill.

Consider a Screen Upgrade

If you find that your screens aren’t cutting it anymore, it might be time to consult a professional. Modern screens offer improved energy efficiency and can be a wise investment in the long run, and updating your porch or patio with a new screen system might provide a much-needed layer of protection against the chill, while still allowing you to enjoy your porch.

The Benefits of Winterizing Your Screens

  • Lower Energy Costs: Effectively winterizing screens can lead to increased savings on your heating bills.
  • Increased Comfort: Enjoy warmer indoor temperatures and reduced drafts.
  • Extended Screen Lifespan: Regular maintenance and winterization can extend the life of your screens.
  • Environmental Benefits: A well-insulated home reduces energy consumption, which is always good for our planet.
  • Enhanced Curb Appeal: A well-kept screen adds to the aesthetics of your home.

Consider Insulating Your Screens for Maximum Winter Protection

Winter brings its own set of challenges, and while we love the scenic beauty it offers, no one enjoys the cold drafts sneaking through the screens.

Enhance Your Entryway with a Retractable Screen Door

Retractable screen doors are the perfect way to add a touch of elegance to your home’s entryway — but even better, they’re also incredibly practical. Whether you’re wishing for more fresh air and natural light throughout your home, looking to elevate your home’s curb appeal, or simply craving the flexibility of indoor-outdoor living, an entryway screen door could be exactly what you need.

In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of retractable screens — from the simple pleasure of a gentle breeze to the tangible convenience of saving money on energy bills. Get ready to discover how installing a retractable screen door could change how you live.

Advantages of Retractable Screen Doors

Retractable screen doors offer the ideal blend of functionality and style. Let’s take a detailed look at why a retractable screen door is a game-changer for almost any home:

1. Access to Fresh Air and Natural Light

One of the most immediate advantages of a retractable screen door is the easy access to fresh air and sunlight. With a retractable screen, you can keep the breeze moving and the sun shining all day without worrying about bugs or other pests getting inside.

Unlike swinging screen doors, retractable screen doors are designed to be discreet and unobtrusive when not in use — no need to prop the door open and take up space on the porch. Retractable screens can disappear into their integrated housing, allowing you to instantly create your ideal atmosphere.

2. Efficiency

Retractable screen doors can also improve your home’s energy efficiency thanks to improved cross-ventilation and natural temperature control. Instead of adjusting the air conditioner, you can use a retractable screen to let fresh air inside and cool down your house.

3. Ease of Use

Retractable screen doors are also extremely simple to operate. Most models have a simple mechanism that allows you to open and close the door smoothly with minimal physical effort.

Retractable screens are low-maintenance, too. Regular cleaning and occasional lubrication is typically all the upkeep required to keep them in good working condition for many years.

4. Curb Appeal

A retractable screen door serves as more than just a functional barrier against pests and the elements — it’s also an intentional design choice that contributes to the overall aesthetic appeal of your home. Retractable screens come in a wide range of design options, with various colors, frame styles, and mesh patterns to choose from so that your screen door matches your home’s existing décor and architecture.

5. Custom Sizing

Each retractable screen door is custom-sized to your opening. Retractable doors can accommodate large or extended openings.

Retractable Screen Door Installation

Installing a retractable screen door is usually a simple, straightforward process. Here are a few tips to help make the process as smooth as possible for you:

Installation Tip 1: Measure More Than Once

Before purchasing a retractable screen door, double-check that you’ve measured your door frame accurately. You’ll need to know the exact dimensions of the doorway to ensure a perfect fit for your screen.

Installation Tip 2: Prepare the Door Frame

Clean the surface of the door frame where you’ll be installing a retractable screen in advance. Making sure ahead of time that the door frame is free of dust and debris will ensure the installation process goes as smoothly as possible. In addition, it’s a good idea to clear the immediate area around the doorway of any obstacles that could hinder the installation technicians as they work.

Ensuring your door frame is square and level, free of warping, helps make for an easier installation and a more structurally sound door.

Installation Tip 3: Choose the Right Installation Partner

Installing a new retractable screen door is a quick and simple job — but it isn’t necessarily a DIY one. You’ll need to find a reliable provider of screen doors who can help you perform the installation. Screenmobile is the perfect choice for homeowners looking for fast and friendly retractable screen door installation services.

Retractable Screen Door Maintenance Tips

Retractable screen doors don’t require much maintenance, but there are still a few things you can do to prolong your screen’s lifespan.

Maintenance Tip 1: Regularly Clean and Inspect Your Screen

Dust, dirt, and pollen tend to build up on screen doors over time. Gently cleaning the screen with a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner on a regular basis is a great way to prevent contaminants from accumulating and blocking airflow.

When you’re cleaning your screen, take the opportunity to visually inspect the mesh for any tears or holes and address any issues you notice before they grow worse. If you live in a humid area, watch out for signs of rust or corrosion on the metal components of the screen door frame.

Maintenance Tip 2: Keep Your Retractable Screen Door Lubricated

Retractable screen doors rely on a combination of moving parts that all need to work together. Periodically applying a dry silicone-based lubricant to components like rollers and hinges will ensure your retractable door continues to glide smoothly and effortlessly.

Maintenance Tip 3: Perform Seasonal Maintenance as Needed

As the winter months approach, it’s a good idea to fully retract your screen into the housing to extend the life of your screen. Retracting your screen door during winter can protect the moving parts against damage from snow and freezing temperatures and extend their lifespan significantly.

Upgrade Your Entryway With a Screenmobile Retractable Screen

From the joy of fresh air and natural light in your home to the convenience of pet-friendly indoor-outdoor living, retractable screen doors have a long list of practical advantages. They also come in a wide range of styles to suit any home’s aesthetic, and they require very minimal maintenance to keep them looking and functioning great.
